Skincare Myths That You Probably Don't Know

Since information is very much accessible right now - right at our fingertips - it is imperative to qualify the information that we are getting. In the world of cosmetics, for instance, there are people who proclaim that the higher the concentration of Vitamin C, the better it is! According to studies, however, a vitamin C concentration of over 20% could result in irritation without apparent benefits. For that reason, depending on the type of your skin in terms of sensitivity, it is advisable to aim for 5 - 10% concentrations as a starting point.

Here are these 3 skincare myths that you probably are not aware of:

  1. Organic Skincare is always better

    • This is a controversial topic in the world of cosmetics. Organic doesn't guarantee that the product is healthier, safer, or better for your skin. As a matter of fact, there are organic essential oils that can cause serious skin irritation and cause a whole host of other skin issues. I mean there are surely TONS of organic ingredients that are phenomenal. However, keep in mind that concentration and exposure level are factors that we need to pay attention to as well. With that said, never buy a skincare product just because it is touted as "organic," and at the same time, don't just blindly reject a product just because it isn't. Make sure to do you homework on the ingredients.

  1. Toners are a necessary part of an acne skin regimen.

    • I've been hearing this since I don't know when! First, let's understand acne - Acne involves oil production, bacteria, clogged pores, and inflammation, with hormones and stress playing a significant role. It is sufficient to thoroughly cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser (especially double cleansing). Adding toner to your regimen could potentially exacerbate your acne! Why? Well, there are many toners that are formulated with alcohols which, as we all know, produce drying effects on the skin. As a result, this could compromise the skin and deteriorate your skin's protective barrier!

    1. Tingling sensations mean the product is working

      • Again, this is false! According to dermatologists, if you're in pain or experiencing a burning sensation after product application, you're likely damaging your skin. Remember that you can thoroughly and effectively exfoliate your skin without causing pain!
